April 26, 2016 – FPInnovations is extremely pleased to announce the appointment of Serge Constantineau to the position of research manager of its SM2 Initiative effective April 25, 2016. The SM2 initiative will oversee research and development of advanced manufacturing technologies that have the potential to impact the global forest sector. These technologies are expected to maximize the usage of fibre currently being harvested and enable the creation of innovative bioproducts from the sub-product material produced during the manufacturing process.

Serge Constantineau

Constantineau is well suited to this challenge with 30 years of experience in forest products and value-added wood-manufacturing operations and extensive experience in research, operations and business development across the forest sector. Mostly recently he served as the vice-president and general manager at White River Forest Products GP mill in White River, Ont. where he successfully led a team focused on cost reduction, fibre recovery and productivity. Previous to this, he held the position of director of business development, product and services at FPInnovations, and management positions at Domtar, Tembec and Resolute Forest Products.

“I am very pleased that Serge has decided to join FPInnovations and am confident in his capacity to lead and deliver the SM2 Initiative,” said Pierre Lapointe, president and CEO of FPInnovations. “SM2 is a key initiative for FPInnovations and our members, and I look forward to announcing important research advances in the coming future.”

The SM2 Initiative will include a series of pre-commercial research and development projects. The launch project for the SM2 Initiative is a collaborative effort which includes partners DK Spec, Centre de recherche industrielle du Québec (CRIQ), Institut de recherche d’Hydro-Québec (IREQ) and Laval University among others. Additional industrial partners from the forest and technology sectors are also expected to join. The SM2 research projects will focus on the development of five innovative new technologies that will address many of the challenges currently being faced by the industry including the secondary manufacturing sector.
