Turning stalks into sugars in Sarnia?

November 13, 2014, Sarnia, Ont. – Bioindustrial Innovation
Canada is working with regional partners to discover opportunities for a
commercial plant in Sarnia that would turn cornstalks and wheat stalks into
sugars for use in the biochemical industry.

According to a report in the Sarnia Observer, the federal
government’s Growing Forward 2 initiative as well as several regional partners
in the bioeconomy have committed a combined $500,000 to take a look at the technology
behind turning stalks into sugars, as well as the opportunities for
commercialization.

IGPC, BioAmber and Jungbunzlauer Canada are among the corporate
partners in the region that are contributing the project. The overall goal is
to have a commercial stalks to sugars biofuel plant operational in the
community by2018.
