Biofuel at forefront of B.C. green community

May 30, 2014, Surrey, B.C. – The community of Surrey, B.C.
has developed its ‘Green Surrey’ program, focusing on introducing green
technologies and practices into the community’s industry and infrastructure.

According to a report in The Now Newspaper, the community is
moving forward with plans to green the community in conjunction with its
sustainability charter.

At the forefront of the green movement is the $65 million
biofuels facility being built in Pott Kells. The biofuel facility is expected
to be the only fully integrated closed-loop waste management system in North
American upon its expected completion in 2015. The facility will process
upwards of 80,000 metric tonnes of waste per year. The biofuel will be used to
power the city’s waste management vehicles.

The community also includes a district energy system,
electric vehicle charging stations and ample parkland acquired in the last
decade. The city is also working on a Biodiversity Conservation Strategy.
