University of Guelph turns farm waste into biocoal

Dec. 18, 2014 - University of Guelph researchers are looking into whether farm waste can be transformed into energy cost-effectively. The focus is on creating a demonstration site before establishing commercially-viable operations.
The team has proven that pressure cooking farm waste can creat easily transported material that can fuel energy-producing facilities in the same way coal has been used. In fact, the material even looks like coal.
According to the Guelph Mercury, “the cooking uses heated water as a medium to create a dry biomass product boasting the same amount of energy as coal.”
