Nov. 16, 2011 - When coal is phased out in 2014, Ontario Power
Generation's biomass project at the Atikokan Generating Station will
hopefully be managed in an environmentally sustainable manner.
According to an article in the Atitokan Progress, Ontario Power Generation (OPG) plant manager for its Northwest Thermal operations, Chris Fralick, said that the company is actively working on how to make the harvesting and processing of biomass as environmentally renewable as possible.
OPG hired the Pembina Institute to conduct a sustainability analysis of the harvesting and processing of two million
oven-dried tonnes of Ontario forest-based biomass used at
four OPG coal plants, including a separate study for the Atitokan plant. The analyses found that the concept is sustainable and that there are significant decreases to greenhouse gas emissions, as well as both social and economic benefits.
