Jan. 5, 2012, Prince Rupert, BC - Residents of Prince Rupert have begun a
full-scale lobbying effort in order to prevent the proposed building of
a wood pellet terminal by Pinnacle Renewable Energy Group on the waterfront.
In an article published in The Northern View, at a recent city council meeting, a petition signed by 91 residents was presented. The petition raises community corners that, "that dust from the terminal as well as increased train will
negatively affect their health and quality of life in a neighbourhood
that already experiences plenty of noise from the rail yard currently
used by CN - a rail yard that would need to be expanded for the
terminal."
Pinnacle's president, Leroy Reitsma responded by stating that nothing is being built yet, as they are only in the development phase of the project. However, if they proceed into the
Environmental Assessment portion, there will be a substantial period of community consultation.
"We look forward
to engaging with them at that point in time, looking at what their
concerns are and making sure that we adequately consider them in the
designs of the program,” said Reitsma.
