 Jan 21, 2012, Copenhagen - Increasing the amount of biomass co-fired with
coal at power plants seems to be a relatively simple way to reduce
emissions of CO2. However,
co-firing does raise a number of issues, all of which will be topics at
the 2nd International Workshop on Co-firing Biomass with Coal.
Some of the more pressing issues include:
- What happens if higher percentages of biomass are co-fired?
- How can the quality of biomass be improved and standardised, by processes such as torrefaction?
- How does increasing the rate of co-firing influence the composition and use of ash?
- What co-firing is actually happening at power plants?
- How is the biomass sourced and certified - what are the sustainability issues?
- What is the future for biomass co-firing?
These issues and others will be discussed at the 2nd International
Workshop on Cofiring Biomass with Coal organised by the IEA Clean Coal
Centre, with assistance from IEA Bioenergy Task 32 and VGB. It follows
on from the successful first workshop held at Drax power station, UK in
January 2011.
The Workshop will be held at the Hotel Phoenix
in Copenhagen, Denmark from 27-28 March 2012. There will be one and a
half days of presentations and discussion. There will be a dinner for
all delegates on 27 March, kindly sponsored by DONG Energy. The workshop
will finish with a tour of Avedøre power plant on 28 March. Attendance
at the event costs €250, which includes lunch and refreshments on both
days, the conference dinner, transport to Avedøre and back and a tour of

Registration
opens at 8.00 am on 27 March, and the presentations will begin at 9.00
am. The workshop will finish at 12.30 on 28 March. Lunch will be served,
and then a coach will depart from the hotel at 2.00 pm to take
delegates to Avedøre power plant. The tour, including a presentation
will take about 2½ hours. The coach will leave Avedøre power plant at 5
pm. It will go first to the airport, and then back to the hotel. We aim
to be at Copenhagen airport by 5.30 pm. If delegates need to leave
Avedøre power plant earlier than this time, it will be possible to
organise taxis earlier in the afternoon.
