Feb. 27, 2012, Essex, UK - A huge blaze has broken out at a power
station in Essex, in an area containing about 4,000 tonnes of wood
pellets, according to a BBC report. Concern is rising over the "severe"
fire at Tilbury Power
Station as water sprayed on pellets is increasing their weight,
threatening the building.
About 120 firefighters are tackling the blaze. The heart of the fire is in the pellet fuel-handling area and
it is proving "physically and technically challenging" to bring under
control, Essex chief fire officer David Johnson said.
Currently there are more than 120 firefighters, 15 fire
engines, three aerial ladder platforms, a mass foam attack unit and
support from London crews at the scene.
The firefighters were planning to starve the blaze of oxygen. The same power plant had a large fire in 2009 as well, when it was a coal burning facility.
