Komptech's new "turnable" chipper
Written by Komptech
Mar. 1, 2012 - Narrow lanes, restricted visibility, no room to turn - chipping on logging roads can be a driving and working challenge for chipper operators and their logistics crews. These chipping jobs can be much more productive if the crew doesn’t have to spend time backing up and turning the chipper around to reach wood on both sides of the road. The first swivelling chipper in the mobile Chippo series meets this need.

The chipping unit is mounted on a sturdy turntable that swivels through 260°, so that the machine is able to work materials on both the left and right sides of the road, without time-consuming and risky turning manoeuvers. Operators benefit directly from higher productivity and more economical working.

New drive concept

Unlike with competitors’ swivelling machines, the Chippo 5010 Cdt (t for turnable) is powered by the 540 hp MAN truck engine, not by an additional engine. This keeps the chipping unit compact and makes it possible to swivel anywhere, since it has only minor overhang over the truck contours. The engine power is transferred essentially loss-free to the chipper by a purpose-designed transmission, ensuring that the maximum performance is available where it is needed.

Further advantages are the powerful Epsilon wood loading crane and the XL discharge pipe. Newly developed by Komptech, it is 16 feet long and has improved contours. It has a two-piece flap for regulating the discharge distance, and lets the operator load the finished chips into a hopper, container or building, precisely and without scatter loss.

Right RPM for every operator

Like all models in the 5010 Cd family, the Chippo turnable comes with one drum speed as standard, which can be selected as 440 or 560 rpm at purchase. 440 rpm is ideal for chipping trunks, while 560 rpm gives better performance for chipping pruning and small pieces. An optional planetary gear lets the operator select between both speeds, for full on-board flexibility and the maximum performance for any application.
