Swedish researchers helping Minnesota college
Written by Grand Rapids Herald-Review
Mar. 12, 2012, Grand Rapids, MI - A research institute in Sweden is assisting Itasca Community College with developing effective methods, systems and technology to develop a bioenergy supply chain.

According to an article in the Grand Rapids Herald-Review, the Forestry Research Institute of Sweden, Skogforsk, will collaborate with Itasca Community College on developing a campus strategy that integrates more biomass to energy measures, as well as creating development and training programs in the bioenergy sector.

In the future, ICC plans to use woody biomass as a fuel source through the enhancement of its already existing wood-fired boiler that serves the campus district heating loop.

"A partnership with Skogforsk is a tremendous opportunity for Itasca Community College," stated Bart Johnson, engineering instructor and Wood Boiler Project Lead at ICC. "The benefits of this partnership position ICC to better meet the educational needs of our region, especially in the woody biomass field. Through this project, ICC is working to help strengthen the wood products industry in Northern Minnesota."
