July 12, 2012, Ottawa, ON - The Canadian Bioenergy Association is offering an opportunity to learn about the latest in torrefied wood technology, a concentrated bio-fuel for renewable energy production. What do large power plants want now? What are the results of recent tests of torrefied wood?
The one-day event “The Status of Torrefied Wood and Pyrolysis Oil” will be held Sept. 5, 2012 at the Hotel Chateau Laurier in Quebec City.
Legally binding European renewable energy targets for 2020 are causing a huge increase in the demand for renewable biomass. For large coal and biomass power plants, demand is primarily in the form of wood pellets, however many other biomass alternatives are being considered. The most exciting option is torrefied wood, 50 per cent more energy dense by volume than pellets and purportedly easier for power plants to use than pellets. Some power plants have already undergone testing. Andritz is an apparent leader in production. Another technology, pyrolysis oil, has been determined by the US Dept of Energy to be the lowest cost route to renewable drop-in transportation fuels, including aircraft fuels. Canadian forest communities have major opportunities for growth in all areas of biomass including bio-fuels, bio-chemicals and bio-chemicals.
