Certification criteria for sustainable biomass
Dec. 2, 2010 – The World Bioenergy Association (WBA) is presenting certification criteria for sustainable biomass for energy on Monday December 6, 2010, at a press conference at COP16 in Cancún, Mexico. Biomass for energy has huge potential to reduce emissions from fossil fuels, which has been shown in a previous paper from WBA. To mobilize this potential, it is necessary to ensure that production can be done in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way. WBA has developed a set of minimum universal sustainability criteria that have to be met by the producers. These criteria are listed in a position paper that will be presented at the press conference. The paper is based on two scientific reports from WBA’s research partner the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.
