Softwood lumber negotiations continue

June 23, 2016 – Trade officials from Canada and the United States are continuing to negotiate a new softwood-lumber agreement.
Canadian International Trade Minister Chrystia Freeland and U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman issued a joint statement last week, reaffirming both countries’ commitments to reaching a new deal.
“While significant differences remain between us, this period of intensive engagement has helped define shared goals and explore options for several key components of any new agreement,” the statement read. “Following this initial 100 days of intensive engagement, the United States and Canada have made significant advances in exploring the key issues and priorities. The United States and Canada are committed to continuing negotiations in an effort to achieve a durable and equitable solution for North American softwood lumber producers, downstream industries and consumers.”
The previous trade agreement expired in October 2015. If a new deal isn’t reached within a year, U.S. companies will be able to file new trade disputes against Canadian imports.
