Ontario has an abundance of fibre

Dec. 3, 2014 - Ontario has an abundance of fibre available for new users after a challenging decade that resulted in 10 pulp and paper mill closures and the same number of large sawmill closures. 

Dec. 3, 2014 – Ontario has an abundance of fibre available for new users after a challenging decade that resulted in 10 pulp and paper mill closures and the same number of large sawmill closures. The remaining industry reduced production over the period to balance supply with demand. Now the province has about 12 million cubic metres of Crown forest round wood fibre available for new users and and equal volume for the remaining Ontario Crown forest round wood fibre users to grow when market conditions permit. The fibre is located in the central portion of the province.

The existing remaining pulp mill and sawmill industry have a more or less balanced wood chip consumption and wood chip production scheme, binding the sawmill production to the pulp mill consumption, according to Ontario Crown Forest material taken from the government website. This leads to lumber production issues when lumber markets improve and when pulp mills reduce production due to pulp market decreases.
