Atlantic Power allowed to burn more rail ties

Sept. 14, 2016 - Atlantic Power Preferred Equity Ltd., the company behind a biomass-fuelled energy plant in Williams Lake, B.C., has been approved by the province to burn more shredded rail ties.

The amended permit from the Ministry of Environment allows the fuel from the plant to contain up to 50 per cent combined rail ties and cleaned demolition debris.

Residents of Williams Lake have expressed concerns about the burning of rail ties, including worries about emissions, ash disposal and storage.
