Banff, Alta.’s biomass district heating system is getting a helping hand from a solar photovoltaics project. The solar array provides a renewable energy source to help heat four municipal buildings that use wood waste for heating a water/glycol mixture pumped through an underground network of pipes.

The town plans to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 30 per cent by 2030 and 80 per cent by 2050. More than $7,600 of the $25,400 project was funded by the Alberta Municipal Solar Program.

An additional $10,200 in funding came from the federal government’s Low Carbon Economy Fund while the town itself provided the remaining $7,600.
