Feb. 15, 2019 - New research from scientists at the University of Alberta is demonstrating how biochar can be optimized for agriculture, water treatment or even carbon storage.
Dec. 18, 2018 - Portuguese bioenergy start-up Futerra Torrefaçao e Tecnologia S.A. (Futerra Fuels) has started the construction of their first commercial scale torrefied pellet production plant in Valongo, Portugal. The plant will have an annual production capacity of 120,000 tons of torrefied pellets and 55,000 tons of regular industrial wood pellets per year.
Dec. 4, 2018 - To mark the recent commissioning of their new biocarbon plant in Mississauga, Ont., CHAR Technologies has produced a video tour of the site.
Oct. 22, 2018 - Mississauga, Ont.-based CHAR Technologies Ltd. has successfully commissioned its biocarbon production facility, the company announced today. CHAR creates two types of biocarbon, an activated charcoal SulfaCHAR and a solid biofuel (bio-coal) CleanFyre. At full capacity, the facility will be capable of producing up to five tonnes per day of biocarbon.
June 29, 2018 - Development company 4Leaf Corp is planning to build a torrefied pellet production facility in McBride, B.C., as part of a larger project that would include a power plant, sawmill and tree nursery.
March 29, 2018 - Mississauga, Ont.-based CHAR Technologies has been approved for a grant totalling $1,062,385 provided by the Government of Ontario through the Low Carbon Innovation Fund (LCIF).
March 26, 2018 - Cool Planet announced the successful completion of its 100th quantifiable, independent trial of Cool Terra, the company's flagship soil health product. The trial was conducted by the University of Florida on bell peppers, and it marks the 100th time the company has conducted a randomized yield improvement test of Cool Terra on specific crops with an independent university or researcher.
Nov. 2, 2017 - For more than 100 years, biochar, a carbon-rich, charcoal-like substance made from oxygen-deprived plant or other organic matter, has both delighted and puzzled scientists. As a soil additive, biochar can store carbon and thus reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and it can slow-release nutrients to act as a non-toxic fertilizer.
April 3, 2017 - Bird Construction, as part of the Harbour City Solutions consortium, executed a contract on March 28, 2017 to design, build, finance, operate and maintain a biosolids management facility for the City of Hamilton, Ontario.
March 23, 2017 - Agriculture technology company Cool Planet has closed on $19.3 million in Series A financing and note conversion to commercialize its Cool Terra and Cool Fauna Engineered Biocarbon products.
March 10, 2017 - Cool Planet is making its Cool Terra Engineered Biocarbon products more commercially available to growers in 2017, following impressive results in independent field trials conducted in 2016. Cool Terra products place long-lasting carbon in the soil which contribute to improved soil health and agricultural sustainability. The field trials demonstrated Cool Terra products can contribute to increased crop yields and more efficient use of inputs for growers.
Feb. 1, 2017 - Near the St. Lawrence River, a stone’s throw away from the Gentilly nuclear power plant, the old LaPrade mill in Bécancour, Que., has come back to life. In one of the old concrete pools designed to produce heavy water, Airex Energy is testing its unique torrefaction process. Their goal: develop a large-scale biochar technology made with forest biomass and agriculture waste.
