Misinformation stalls biofuel switch

Jan. 16, 2015 – In an effort to green the Staten Island Ferries, there's been an effort to pass legislation that would require five per cent biodiesel in the vessels and increase usage over time.
But some officials are opposed to the switch over concerns the fuel would damage the engine and that the engines wouldn’t be under warranty if biodiesel were used, according to an article on Capital New York.com.
“D.E.P. officials echoed similar concerns as those raised by the D.O.T., but said they were awaiting research being conducted by the U.S. Maritime Administration before trying to use biodiesel in their fleet of ships which carry sewage sludge to various treatment plants around the city,” it reads. A biofuel producer told the reporter that there is a great deal of confusion and misinformation on the matter.
