Biofuel from oranges?

November 19, 2014, Tokyo, Japan – Scientists at Japan’s Mie
University are conducting research on biofuel opportunities from inedible
oranges.

According to Z News, early results developing biofuel from
the oranges have been positive, resulting from the oranges’ efficiency and less
corrosive nature.

The scientists used a mix of damaged and rotten oranges and
other waste in tanks along with clostridium cellulovorans bacteria from wood
chips. The mix decomposes the oranges to create a fermentable sugar, which is
then fermented with another organism to provide the biofuel. The whole process
takes around 10 days.
