Carrier ship docked in Singapore refueled with biofuel in carbon-reducing trial

The first refueling of a ship with biofuel by BHP Group Ltd. has taken place in Singapore as part of a trial run toward reducing carbon emissions.

Sustainable feedstock sources, including cooking oil, crude tall oil and sewage sludge, were used to refuel the 81,000-deadweight-tonne dry bulk carrier Kira Oldendorff that was en route to Europe from Australia.

The blended biofuel was said to reduce carbon emissions of between 80 and 90 per cent as compared with conventional residual fuel oils.
