Nov. 15, 2011, Presque Island, ME – A Northern Maine Community College broke ground yesterday for a new 900-kilowatt biomass boiler.
According to an article by the Bangor Daily News, construction on the wood pellet-fueled boiler will begin in April 2012 and will replace the current 30-year-old boiler currently being used.
The boiler will generate enough electricity for nearly 70 percent of the buildings on campus and early
projections estimate a total savings of more than $43,000 in utility
costs annually, in addition to the replacement of an estimated 47,000 gallons of
fuel oil with local pellets
“The changeover to wood pellets will also serve as the equivalent in
reducing carbon emissions to more than 100 cars taken off the road,”
said Tim Crowley, president of NMCC.
