Columnist: power grid can’t rely on wind or solar; consider alternatives like biomass
February 19, 2021 By Canadian Biomass Magazine
A Calgary Herald columnist suggests that the collapse of Texas’ power grid in the wake of a recent winter storm and deep freeze can be seen as a wake-up call for Alberta.
Danielle Smith says wind and solar power don’t have the efficiency needed during the winter months to get through such trying times, and that more reliable sources of energy, including biomass and hydrogen, are better alternatives.
“Wind and solar have had their chance to demonstrate they were the only answer,” she writes. “They’ve failed. Now let’s get serious about the real options so we aren’t the next ones worrying about freezing to death.”
