Biomass best solution for Nelson

October 23, 2014, Nelson, B.C. – The City of Nelson has
determined that biomass is the best solution for a new energy system for a
block of buildings in its downtown core.

According to a report in the Nelson Star, a feasibility
study completed in August has determined that biomass is the most economically viable
solution for the energy system. Originally, the municipality had been looking
at the possibility of using geothermal energy.

The City would use wood waste from local sawmills. It is
expected that the biomass system would reduce emissions by 1,200 tonnes per
year.

A refined financial estimate for the project is expected in
early 2015. Currently the City has the project cost pegged at anywhere from
$2.3 million to $6.3 million, with full ROI in 16-30 years.
