Court orders Royal Dutch Shell to cut its emissions by 45 per cent by 2030

Royal Dutch Shell has been ordered to reduce its carbon emissions by net 45 per cent by 2030, compared to 2019 levels. The ruling by the Hague District Court triggered cheers by climate activism groups.

Shell, however, plans to appeal the court ruling. The company has said its goal is to become net-zero by 2050 or sooner, but the court ruling noted Shell’s reduction plans weren’t sufficiently concrete.

A lawyer for the Dutch arm of Friends of the Earth said the court ruling is the impetus for legal action to take place against oil companies.
