June 23, 2016 – BioCarbon Engineering has a reforestation plan that could allow two operators flying multiple drones to plant up to 36,000 trees per day.

The drones will first fly over a possible reseeding site, scouting to determine its potential, then fly a second pass just a few meters off the ground to drop pre-germinated seeds. The seeds are coated in a hydrogel that provides nutrients for the growing plant.

The company estimates drone reforestation can be performed at about 15 per cent the cost of more traditional reforestation operations.
