Edmonton International Airport, FORGE Hydrocarbons ink SAF deal

Edmonton International Airport (YEG) and Alberta’s FORGE Hydrocarbons have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to showcase their dedication to collaboratively advance sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production in the Edmonton Metro Region.

“Making smart and sustainable decisions go hand-in-hand. FORGE Hydrocarbons’ unique and innovative approach to creating sustainable fuel (SAF) sources aligns with YEG’s responsibility to create a better future for our people and our planet. This partnership will showcase the power of low-emission fuel in the aviation sector and we are excited to scale the development and commercialization of local technology here in the Edmonton Metro Region,” said Myron Keehn, YEG president and CEO.

FORGE Hydrocarbons has a proprietary Lipid-to-Hydrocarbon (LTH) technology developed by David Bressler at the University of Alberta, that offers an innovative approach to producing a cost effective drop-in renewable diesel fuel.

This partnership with YEG builds on FORGE Hydrocarbon’s success of the Mission Innovation initiative (Sky’s the Limit Challenge) and the Alberta Biojet Initiative, both highly successful programs that furthered the development of SAF and the much-needed specialty resources within the province, creating a highly effective biofuels ecosystem.

This endeavour represents our commitment to sustainability, the environment, and the future of clean fuels,” said Tim Haig, FORGE Hydrocarbons CEO.

YEG is on its way to net-zero emissions by 2040 and is actively building partnerships and pathways for the adoption of emerging sustainable technologies.

The FORGE Lipid to Hydrocarbon technology developed at the University of Alberta is a low cost, low carbon, high yield approach to producing drop-in renewable fuels that are indistinguishable from petroleum-based fuels, including SAF. The technology converts waste cooking oils, animal fats and next generation feedstocks such as algal fermentation of agricultural residues and wood waste into renewable fuels.
