Switching from cotton to biomass

June 5, 2012 – Research has begun by scientists at Texas AgriLife
Research to determine how a switch from cotton production to biofuel
crops would alter the environment.

According to an article in AgriLife Today, the project is being done in order to help evaluate if the US can meet its benchmark of producing 36 billion gallons of biofuels by the year 2022.

“The thought is that the second-generation biofuel feedstock systems
will reduce the negative environmental effects associated with the
conventional, intensively managed cropping systems currently in the
region,” said Dr. Nithya Rajan, AgriLife Research agronomist.
