Washington’s abundant forests

Mar. 15, 2012, Port Angeles, WA – A new study by the Washington
Department of Natural Resources states that more than double the amount
of wood that is currently harvested could be used for biomass without
any risks to forest health.

The report, according to an article in The Seattle Times, the Department of Natural Resources believes that the usage of biomass can help the emerging green economy, as well as reduce wildfire risks and improve overall forest health.

"During the past few years, it's been a stabilization function of our
business," said Port Angeles logging company owner Bill Hermann during the press conference. "The lumber markets and such are up and down, but this pretty much goes on steady every day."

However, some opponents to the report claim that the effects of biomass burning on human health is unknown and should be delayed until more research is done. And until that time, the forests should be left alone.
