Finland’s coal ban will lead to biomass imports, experts say

Finland, the most densely forested country in Europe, will need to import biomass to keep up with energy demands now that the country has banned the use of coal by 2029, according to experts.

“It is evident that we need imports,” Riku Huttunen, head of Finland’s energy department, told Reuters.

Reuters reports that Finland’s largest energy lobby group, Energia, expects nearly 60 per cent of the fuel mix in Finland’s CHP plants will come from biomass in 2030.
