Oct 23, 2011, Jaffrey, NH - Another fire and explosion hit the New England Wood Pellet plant here early Friday evening, with over 100 firefighters required to battle the blaze well into Saturday morning.

Fire Chief David Chamberlain and
Assistant Chief Keith Dupuis responded to the reported building fire
around 6:18 p.m. Thursday night to find a smoke in the building and a
fire in the cooling tower, which is part of the process of manufacturing
the wood pellets. Jaffrey and Peterborough firefighters were on scene
of the two-alarm fire, with Dublin and Rindge firefighters on the way,
when an explosion escalated the two-alarm fire to a four alarm fire.

“We
were initiating a fire attack on that when there was an explosion in
the bag house, which is another part of the process. At that point crews
were evacuated so we could regroup.”

The plant is expected to resume operating this week. More information and company comment is available here.
