The groundwork is being laid in Winnipeg for a district geothermal energy system at the Railside at the Forks development. Work on the heating and cooling structure began Wednesday.
The site is located between the CityTV building and Shaw Park. Upon completion, the geothermal system will provide service to about 1,200 new residential units about 100,000 square feet of commercial space. If natural gas was chosen as its heating fuel, the amount of annual emitted greenhouse would have been more than 12,000 tonnes.
The system being installed is regarded as a completely renewable source of energy.
