German wood pellet production rises strongly

July 26, 2012, Hanover, Germany — Germany's pellet production in the first half of 2012 was 15pc higher than in the same period last year, the country's wood fuel and pellet association DEPV said.
In the first six months of this year, Germany's 54 pellet factories produced more than 1mn t of pellets, with the second quarter enjoying a particularly strong production growth to 557,000t, or a 16pc rise year on year.
DEPV expects overall pellet production this year to breach the 2mn t threshold for the first time — compared with output of 1.9mn t in 2011.
The growth can be attributed mainly to an increase in medium and large-sized heat plants using pellets — with the increase in household pellet heating systems contributing to a lesser extent. Exports also played a role, DEPV chairman Martin Bentele said.
Domestic consumption of pellets, which covers around 75pc of production, is expected to rise by 12pc against last year, to 1.6mn t.
German pellets comprise 87pc sawmill chips.
