Giant sea kelp studied as sustainable source for producing biofuel

Scientists are studying the means to grow giant kelp – recognized as a source for making biofuel – so that it can be produced on a large scale.

Unlike such crops as corn and soybeans, kelp doesn’t require land, freshwater or fertilizer, and can grow more than a foot in a day under the right conditions. Reaching those conditions is at the heart of scientists’ studies.

Using kelp in the development of biofuels is seen as a more sustainable approach than that of terrestrial crops. Marine biomass can be converted into different forms of energy such as ethanol and bio-crude.
