Group finds issue with U.S. wood pellets

Jan. 6, 2017 - An international environmental protection campaign group is voicing concerns about the proposed use of U.S. wood pellets to fuel a power plant in Ireland.

Natural Resources Defence Council’s Sasha Stashwick told the Irish Times skyrocketing exports of wood pellets from forests in southeastern U.S. have had a devastating impact. She argues new additional demand from the region is unsustainable.

Bord na Móna, the energy company behind the plan to convert to wood pellets, says it is hard pressed to find sufficient local supply.
