May 13, 2014, Point Tupper, N.S. – Sawmill operators are
raising concerns over the quality of wood being used to supply the biomass
plant in Point Tupper.
According to a report in The Chronicle Herald, the concerns
stem from the belief that valuable hardwoods are being used as part of the
biomass supply, rather than being used for flooring and lumber.
Several contractors have cited examples of hardwood logs
being sold to the Point Tupper biomass plant for chipping, something that was
not supposed to happen when the biomass plant became operational. The biomass
was instead intended to provide value for lower value stands.
