Korea’s pellet market instability

February 16, 2016
By RISI

February 16, 2016 - Growth in the Korean industrial pellet market skyrocketed from 2012 to 2014. Over this time, the market saw unprecedented, 1,200 per cent growth with imports growing from 120,000 tonnes in 2012 to 1.9 million tonnes in 2014. However, pellet imports had plummeted by early 2015 due to dwindling enthusiasm over pellet co-firing in Korea.

These new developments have further shaped RISI’s outlook for pellet demand growth in the nation, driving down last year’s demand growth projection by more than 60 per cent. In a new webinar, Seth Walker, bioenergy economist at RISI, discusses why this occurred in Korea and how it has changed future expectations in the global market.

The Global Pellet Demand Outlook study, new from RISI, analyzes recent developments like these to identify risks associated with doing business in certain regions and pinpoint areas expected to have the highest demand growth.
