Japan turns to biomass energy, but fuel shortage looms

Sept. 27, 2017 - Japanese investors have set their sights on biomass energy to take advantage of government subsidies, raising questions about how the projects will find sufficient wood fuel.
Rueters reports more than 800 projects have already won government approval with a total capacity of 12.4 GW, which would require up to 60 million tonnes of wood pellets. Global output was 24 million tonnes in 2014.
