New York contract with Hydro-Quebec will see state moving away from fossil fuels

New York State will be powered by Hydro-Quebec for 25 years, beginning in 2025. The arrangement is seen as a major step by the state toward decarbonization.

The contract will see Hydro-Quebec supply nearly 1,250 megawatts of hydroelectricity to the state – the equivalent electrical consumption of about one million homes.

About 85 per cent of the state’s electricity supply currently comes from fossil fuels. New York State is aiming for renewable energy to cover about 70 per cent of its energy consumption by 2030.
