April 30, 2018 - The latest white paper from FutureMetrics tackles solutions to the challenges of balancing the power grid during the transition to a decarbonized future.

The decarbonized grid of the future will still have baseload from hydro and possibly nuclear, but it will also have a large amount of power generated from wind and solar. The solution for the variability and intermittency of wind and solar generated power is energy storage.

Perhaps there will be a solution to grid-level energy storage based on large batteries in the future. Today and in the foreseeable future, there is no conceivable battery solution that can provide the megawatt-hours of power sufficient to keep the grid energized for more than very short periods if the gap between demand and insufficient supply is persistent.

There is a sustainable non-carbon emitting energy storage solution that can play an important role in the transition from now to a future in which most power generation does not emit CO2.

This white paper describes how grid balancing from the solar energy captured by plants and converted into and stored as energy-rich carbohydrates should be part of how we make a reliable and economically feasible transition to a decarbonized future.
