Canadian biotechs focus on efficiency
Financing for Canadian biotechs was flat in 2012 and companies must now aim at boosting their focus on efficiency if they hope to attract new investments in 2013. Although total financing remained at $755 million in 2012, venture funding was down by 60 per cent to $70 million. A report from Ernst & Young shows that despite understanding the importance of demonstrating value, many biotech companies are investing little to gather information they need to succeed.

Lignol acquires majority sharehold of Territory Biofuels
Canadian company Lignol Energy Corporation will become the majority shareholder of Territory Biofuels Limited and it plans to restart TBF’s Darwin refinery in Australia. The refinery is capable of producing up to 150 million litres of biodiesel a year at full capacity, and is the only glycerin refinery in Australia.

PFI Annual Conference
The Pellet Fuels Institute Annual Conference is taking place July 28 to 30 in Ashville, North Carolina, and highlights new and proven applications of densified biomass fuel. The event attracts a broad range of individuals from the industry, and features two days of educational sessions and more. Carlton Owen of the U.S. Endowment for Forestry & Communities is the keynote speaker, and will draw from his 30 years of experience as he speaks on numerous topics.

Biomass plant expected at full capacity by late June
Nova Scotia's new biomass plant in Point Tupper creates electricity from harvested biomass, and has been partly functioning for the past few months. By the end of June, the $200 million facility is said to be in full production. The plant is expected to generate about 60 megawatts of electricity a year, enough to power about 50,000 homes and the utility is expected to buy roughly 500,000 tonnes of biomass fuel annually.

Dutch companies sign agreement for MILENA gasification
Dutch companies, ECN and Royal Dahlman, have signed a license agreement that lets ECN use Royal Dahlman's Milena gasification technology to produce green gas, electricity and fluid fuels from waste and biomass. The companies say that Milena can help solve both waste and energy problems.
