Nova Scotia’s new market for wood chips: biomass

After Northern Pulp closed at the end of January this year, Nova Scotia sawmills and contractors faced an excess of wood chips and other residuals.
To combat this, the Nova Scotia government is looking at several options, including district heating, wood pellets and new export markets, reports CBC News.
In May, the provincial government also signed an order requiring Nova Scotia Power to buy more renewables from within the province, which led the utility to buy more wood chips, which are burned in biomass boilers at Brooklyn Energy and in Point Tupper.
According to a spokesperson for Nova Scotia Power, the two biomass plants have been running at 50-60 per cent capacity since June – a big change, given that Brooklyn Energy does not usually run through the summer.
