Ottawa invests $9.74M to advance Alberta’s hydrogen economy

The federal government is contributing more than $9.74 million to companies, projects and research that will grow Alberta’s emerging hydrogen economy.

The funds, made through Prairies Economic Development Canada, will to improve access to hydrogen fuels, support product testing, attract investment to Alberta’s hydrogen industry, and increase the availability of quality training opportunities to commercialize new technologies, the government said in a news release.

Edmonton Global is receiving $3,744,000 for two projects to strengthen the regional hydrogen supply chain and expand investment initiatives to grow the Edmonton regional economy.

The Alberta Motor Transport Association and the University of Alberta are receiving $3 million to increase access to hydrogen fuel and showcase the benefits of hydrogen technology for heavy vehicles.

And Edmonton’s C-FER Technologies is receiving $3 million to upgrade its testing facility for hydrogen fuel infrastructure, equipment and technologies.

According to the federal news release, the global market for hydrogen as a fuel is expected to be over $11 trillion by 2050, and Canada’s share of the global market for hydrogen is estimated to be up to $50 billion per year.
