Philippine biomass power plant wins approval

August 8, 2012, Singapore, PH — Philippine renewable energy firm Green Power Bukidnon has won government approval to go ahead with the building of a biomass power plant in the south of the country, starting in this year's fourth quarter.
The 35MW plant to be located at Bukidnon on Mindanao island will use waste from sugar cane, corn and rice production as feedstock to help ease threats of power shortages. Around 16mn t/yr of residue from the rice, coconut, palm oil, sugar and wood industries are produced domestically, the country's department of agriculture estimates.
The Philippines issued new biomass feed-in tariff rates last month, which had been delayed since March. These are at a proposed rate of 7 pesos/kWh (16.6¢/kWh), an official from the country's energy ministry said. The Philippine government is targeting to double its 5,300MW of renewable energy-based installed capacity for power generation by 2030.
