Vermeer's new trommel screen

February 20, 2013, Pella, IA — Vermeer introduced a newly enhanced trommel screen that puts more control in the hands of the operator and more power to produce a quality end product.

The TR521 trommel screen by Wildcat, a Vermeer Company, is now available with a Tier 4i engine and additional features designed to process mulch, compost and pre-screen green waste material with high moisture content.

The Cummins 110-horsepower (82.1 kW) Tier 4i/Stage IIIB engine increases the power delivered to the TR521 by 10 percent compared to the previous model, and meets all U.S., Canadian and European emission regulations. The additional horsepower allows the processing of heavy, wet material with more consistent results and powers the auxiliary circuit to run ancillary machines.

Operation is intuitive with the Vermeer ACS control system. The TR521 can be controlled through either the Vermeer DP10 display, which is mounted on the machine’s control panel, or with a handheld transceiver remote. This allows the operator to have complete control of the trommel whether standing nearby or operating from the loader. Either control offers the operator the choice of four user-defined programs that enable the operators to easily return to previously used settings, or the flexibility to make immediate adjustments when incoming material type or volume changes. Both control locations provide diagnostic alerts and engine data.

A new feature on the TR521 is quick-change screens, which are designed for quicker and simpler screen changes. This is especially important when processing a wide range of materials that require different screen sizes. Screen panels are tensioned to add rigidity and allow the use of a smaller gauge or diameter wire. Using smaller gauge wire increases the screening area, resulting in a larger open area to screen material. This is especially true when working with wet material, as there is more area for the material to flow through on a tensioned screen panel. Customers have a choice of screen styles — either standard steel or stainless panels. The stainless can be used in higher moisture or highly abrasive material types, reducing the amount of material that sticks to the screen.

With a large 5-cubic-yard (3.8 m3) hopper, the TR521 is capable of producing up to 150 cubic yards (114.7 m3) per hour of consistent, quality material. A low-height 9.5-inch (2.9 m) hopper infeed helps to decrease loading cycles and eliminates the need of loading ramps for most wheel loaders. A large throat opening from the hopper into the drum means reduced material bridging and buildup.

Square lift bars inside the drum enables more material to be processed at a slower speed, helping to reduce fuel consumption and prolong drum life. A smoother exterior means less brush bounce and noise while in operation. Maintenance is greatly improved with removable side panels that expose the full length of the drum and fines conveyor at ground level.

Safety was an important factor in the design of the TR521 trommel’s four independent stabilizing legs, which provides necessary support when the machine is setup on uneven ground. The operator is able to level the machine with the help of the front stabilizer controls conveniently located near the driver’s side of the trommel. The proximity of the stabilizer controls to the fifth wheel hitch aids in securing to the transport vehicle. A side ladder and upper walkway provide safe access to the top of the drum for screen maintenance and removal. Lockable entry doors provide access to the trunnion rollers and additional security.
