“The year 2016 is a transitional year for the forestry industry,” Lessard said. “It is essential to look to innovation to ensure the revival of the forestry sector, for the development of Quebec and for the future of several local communities. Quebec must fully assume its leading role in innovation. That is why I insist that we work together and have a roundtable discussion. I make it a priority because, together, we can ensure the emergence of a new forest products industry in Quebec, because we firmly believe in our companies, our workers and our communities.”
The forum will highlight possible ways to promote the transformation and upgrading of the entire forestry sector in Quebec through innovation, research and development.
Five major projects
For the forum, the government will create five large work camps that will be mandated to identify problems and find solutions for advancing the forest products industry.
These projects will target five sectors and will be chaired by leading experts in the field:
– Sawing site;
– Construction pulp, paper and bioproducts;
– Construction panels;
– Timber construction site; and
– Bioenergy projects.
The chairman of each site will present the results of its work at the forum.
