Quebec offers biomass for harvest

Sept. 12, 2011, Rouyn-Noranda, QC – The Quebec Department of Natural Resources and Wildlife is calling for proposals to allocate available forest biomass in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region.

Quebec Department of Natural Resources and Wildlife is calling for
proposals to allocate available forest biomass in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue
region. The request for proposals process seeks projects that have a
positive effect on economic activity and job creation in the region.
Forest biomass covered by this program includes the unused parts of trees such
as tops and branches. At present, large amounts of forest biomass in Quebec's
public forests could be harvested and processed, leaving interesting
opportunities for the timber left on the cutover. Sustainability criteria will be
used to determine harvesting parameters, with 30 to 50% of forest biomass to be
left on the ground.
The conversion of forest biomass is part of
the Québec Energy Strategy and Plan of Action against Climate Change. It will
allow Quebec to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and will facilitate the
implementation of forest management strategies and promote the rehabilitation
of deciduous forests.
