NS responds to allegations of old-growth harvesting for biomass

March 5, 2018 - Nova Scotia's Department of Natural Resources and Port Hawkesbury Paper are responding to allegations from a local harvester and former sawmill owner that the paper company harvested old growth to supply a local biomass power plant.

Ryan McIntyre, manager of forest management planning for the provincial department, told the Chronicle Herald the department did not believe old growth was being harvested for biomass, but that the cut area was not visited in-person by the department prior to harvesting.

Mill manager Marc Dube said hardwood stands are not clearcut but instead managed for the forest ecosystem.
