Sept. 8, 2017 - Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) and Alberta Innovates (AI) are pleased to present best-selling Canadian author and professor Thomas Homer Dixon as the keynote speaker at SPARK 2017.
By SPARK 2017
Dixon will explore how complexities facing today’s world will shape the technological breakthroughs of the next decade. As he sees it, large-scale stresses are linked – climate change, the energy transition, rapid urbanization, chronic low growth and political instability – but that they will create “perhaps surprising” opportunities for innovation.
Dixon holds the Centre for International Governance Innovation Chair of Global Systems in the Balsillie School of International Affairs at the University of Waterloo, Ont.. He is a frequent commentator in the Globe and Mail and the author of the thought-provoking book, The Ingenuity Gap: Can We Solve the Problems of the Future?, published to widespread acclaim in 2000. The book was described by Pultizer Prize winner E.O. Wilson as “the most persuasive forecast of the 21st century I have seen.”
Dixon will set the tone for SPARK 2017, a clean-technology conference all about innovation. SPARK takes place Nov. 6-8 in Edmonton. ERA and Alberta Innovates are co-hosting this event to support game-changing solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and advance the bioindustrial sector.
