StatsCan now tracks wood pellet exports

April 16, 2013, Ottawa, ON – Canadian pellet producers can now track exports of their product, with the introduction by Statistics Canada of a code specifically for wood pellets.
StatsCan’s Canadian International Merchandise Trade Database now includes HS coding 4401.31 for wood pellets, which will make tracking exports to the EU, U.S. and Asia much easier.
The latest numbers show that in January of 2012, Canada exported nearly 115 million kilograms (115,000 metric tonnes) of pellets to the EU. In February of 2012, just over 33 million kilograms (33,000 metric tonnes).
The code also refers to imports. Previously, pellet exports were estimated using the 4401.30 code, which included wood waste, sawdust and scrap.
