Jan. 30, 2018 - Silvacom Ltd. and Alberta Innovates are pleased to announce that the Bio-Resource Information Management System (BRIMS) is now available for public use.

BRIMS is a world-class, publicly available data and information management system that collates inventories from forestry, agriculture, and municipal sectors to create a centralized, comprehensive assessment of biomass, ecosystem services, and land-use data. Access to this information is provided through an easy-to-use, online interactive web application – www.BRIMS.ca.

John Peters, Director of Energy & Environment with Silvacom says, “Existing forestry and agricultural operations in the province are constantly being approached by potential investors to consider collaboration in bioresource initiatives. For companies to take advantage of these opportunities, they require access to the best available biomass and ecosystem services data to help inform investment and logistical decisions. Silvacom is thrilled to be a part of the BRIMS story as we know this system is what investors have been looking for.”

BRIMS enables informed bio-resource management and investment decisions in the province by identifying dependable, spatially explicit sources of biomass and other ecosystem services in Alberta. It aims to advance the bio-economy in Alberta by supporting investment, guiding policy development, and fostering further analysis.

“Our investment in the BRIMS application demonstrates our commitment to diversifying the economy by providing businesses and government access to data that will both support sound investment decisions and help build a greener Alberta,” says Laura Kilcrease, Alberta Innovates CEO.

The Bio-Resource Management Information System (BRIMS) is now live at www.BRIMS.ca.

BRIMS is a multi-phase project that began life as a proof of concept framework and grew to become the comprehensive, multi-resource database that it is today. To encourage green investment in the province, there needs to be public access to high-resolution, best available biomass and other ecosystem services data. The BRIMS web application was specifically designed by Silvacom and Alberta Innovates, with data partnerships from the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI) and the Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC), to respond to this need.
